inference
The literary definition of “inference” is more specifically: “The use of clues provided by the author to figure things out.” You might use these context clues to figure out things about the characters, setting, or plot.
denotation
The most common type of denotation that you’ll come across is in literature. Denotation means the literal definition of a word. To give an example, the denotation for “blue” is the color blue.
connotation
The use of a word to suggest a different association than its literal meaning, which is known as denotation. For example, blue is a color, but it is also a word used to describe a feeling of sadness, as in: “She’s feeling blue.” Connotations can be either positive, negative, or neutral.
subjective
based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions. “his views are highly subjective”
objective
not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts. “historians try to be objective and impartial”
cold case
an unsolved criminal investigation which remains open pending the discovery of new evidence
