Appraisal
the measurement of a person’s communication skills
assessment
establishment of whether an individual has any specific speech and language disorders
diagnosis
the process of determining the nature of a disease or disorder and distinguishing it from other possible conditions
multidisciplinary assessment team
it could include a doctor, a social worker, a physiotherapist, and/or staff from local authority, housing and voluntary organisations. These professionals can work together to deliver person centred and coordinated care and sup-port for the person with care needs.
case history
a record of a person’s background or medical history kept by a doctor or social worker.
screening
the evaluation or investigation of something as part of a methodical survey, to assess suitability for a particular role or purpose.
baseline function
A baseline can be any number that serves as a reasonable and defined starting point for comparison purposes.
oral-motor assessment
This assessment is used by Speech and Language Therapists to evaluate oral motor skills. Oral motor skills refer to the movement of muscles of the face (e.g. lips and jaw) and oral area (e.g. tongue and soft palate), especially the movements related to speech.
standardized tests
A standardized test is a test that is given to students in a very consistent manner; meaning that the questions on the test are all the same, the time given to each student is the same, and the way in which the test is scored is the same for all students.

Behavioral observation is a functional, utilitarian approach in that it focuses on the clearly observable ways in which the client interacts with his or her environment.

a type of on-going assessment that involves periodic monitoring of a student’s daily performance in relation to what is taught. It provides a measure of a student’s progress through the curriculum and whether that progress is adequate.

a planned, ongoing process used by all students and teachers during learning and teaching to elicit and use evidence of student learning to improve student understanding of intended disciplinary learning outcomes and support students to become self-directed learners.”
