The outer structure of a building.
Building Envelope
Drawing of a structure with the view from overhead, looking down.
Plan View
a horizontal member laid directly on a foundation on which the framework of
a building is erected.
Sill Plate
Drawing of a structure with the view from the side, looking at the
vertical plane.
Elevation View
In surveying, a horizontal distance measured at right angles to a survey line to
locate a point off the line.
Offsets
a bolt with a threaded portion projecting from a structure, used to hold the
frame of a building secure against wind load; also known as a hold-down bolt,
foundation bolt and sill bolt.
Anchor Bolt
a representative of a governmental authority employed to inspect
construction work for compliance with applicable codes, regulations and
ordinances

excavation, used as a guide to elevations and to outline the building envelope.
Batter Boards
A deep hole, covered and usually lined or filled with rocks, that holds
drainage water until it soaks into the ground.
Dry Well
an excavation to determine the nature of the material encountered or to
disclose subsurface conditions.
