Global Language
a language used across the world for all written, spoken and digital communication (it my coexist with or dominate local languages)
lingua franca
common language or form of communication which is used over and above local languages or dialects in order to allow communication between groups of people who speak different languages
Multilingualism
when individual speak more than one language in their daily life
Kachru’s circles model
a model which classifies the ways English is used in the world
Accent
the characteristic pronunciation associated with a geographical area or social group
Dialect
a form of a language that people speak in a particular part of a country, containing some different words and grammar
Received Pronunciation
the standard way in which middle-class speakers of southern British English pronounce words
Standard English
a dialect of English considered çorrect’ and ‘normal’ because it has distinctive and standardized features of spelling, lexis and syntax - it is the form of English usually used in formal writing
Non-standard English
refers to regional forms of English and English forms which are not judged to be socially acceptable
Prescriptivism
the view that language should have a strict set of rules that must be obeyed in speech and writing
Descriptivism
the view that no use of language is incorrect, and that variation should be acknowledged and recorded rather than corrected
Creolisation
when two or more distinct languages merge to form a new variety with its own native speakers
Diversity
(spread of English throughout the world, through favourable social, economic and geographical influences, has given rise to a diversity of forms of the language)
the fact of many different types of things or people being included in something; a range of different things or people
