Vocab Flashcards
Adaptive radiation
Rapid increase in the number of species with a common ancestor, characterized by great ecological and morphological diversity.
Artificial selection
Evolutionary process in which humans consciously select for or against particular features in organisms
Autosome
Any chromosome that is not a sex chromosome.
Fossil
The remains or impression of a prehistoric organism preserved in petrified form or as a mold or cast in rock.
Homologous structures
Species that have similar structure but not necessarily same function.
Analogous structure
Has same function but not same structure or descend from same ancestor.
Keystone species
A species on which other species in an ecosystem largely depend, such that if it were removed the ecosystem would change drastically.
Mimicry
When one part of an organism’s body resembles another part
Morphology
The science of the form and structure of organisms
Niche
The functional role played by an organism in an ecosystem.
Parasitism
A symbiosis in which one organism, the parasite, causes harm to another, the host, which the parasite utilizes as habitat and depends on for resource acquisition
Ring species
A situation in which two populations that do not interbreed are living in the same region and connected by a geographic ring of populations that can interbreed
Symbiosis
Interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.
