Classification Flashcards
Goal of Taxonomy
Grouping and naming organisms
Levels of taxonomy
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Species
Organisms that can interbreed under natural conditions and produce a fertile offspring.
Classical Taxonomy Problems
Not all species reproduce sexually
Prokaryotes reproduce asexually
Even a few animals reproduce asexually
What is phylogeny?
The branching of relationships between entire species.
What is a clade?
A group of organisms that includes an ancestor and all descendants of that ancestor.
For how long has life been evolving?
4 billion years.
Limitations of classical taxonomy
Lack of resolution, can’t illustrate time, grouping are challenged by secondary loss of characteristics, ineffective with extinct species.
Where are the descendants in a phylogeny tree?
Closer to the tips.
What is speciation
When branches split (evolution of separate gene pools).
