vocab #1 Flashcards
Community of interacting organisms
Ecosystem
All living organisms in am ecosystem
Biotic Factor
Non-living physical and chemical parts in an environment
Abiotic Factors
Anything living
Organism
A group of living organisms with similar individuals or able to interbreed .
Species
Inhabitants of a town or area or country
Population
A group of people living in the same place possibly with similar characteristics.
Community
Natural home or environment of a living organism
Habitat
Organisms who are better adapted tend to survive and breed
Natural selection
Organisms have been thought to have diversified for earlier forms on earth
Evolution
An organism that is able to make its own food from organic substances using light or chemical energy.
Producers or Autotroph
An organism that can not make it own food. instead consuming other living organisms
Consumers or heterotrophs
Organisms that eat autotrophs also called herbivores
Primary Consumers
Organisms that primarily eat consumers also known as carnivores
Secondary Consumers
Organisms at the tip top of the food chain who eat secondary consumers (carnivores)
Tertiary Consumers
eat only plants (primary consumers)
Herbivores
strictly eat meat (secondary consumers)
Carnivores
eat both plants and meat
Omnivores
Decompose organic material
Decomposers
link of organisms where each depend on the other for a food source.
Food chain
System if interlocking food chains
Food Web
diagram of predatory relationships
Energy Pyramind
processes by which carbon compounds are converted in the environment, involving the incorporation of carbon dioxide into living tissue and to the atmosphere through respiration, the decay of dead organisms, and the burning of fossil fuels.
Carbon Cycle
series of processes by which nitrogen and its compounds are converted in the environment and in living organisms, including nitrogen fixation and decomposition.
Nitrogen Cycle
biogeochemical cycle that describes the movement of phosphorus through the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere.
Phosphorous Cycle
is the observed process of change in the species structure of an ecological community over time.
Ecological succession
succession of plant life, occurring in an environment in which new substrate devoid of vegetation and other organisms usually lacking soil, such as a lava flow or area from retreated glacier
Primary Succession
changes which take place on a previously colonized, but disturbed or damaged habitat
Secondary succession
first to colonize previously disrupted or damaged ecosystems, beginning a chain of ecological succession that ultimately leads to a more biodverse steady-state ecosystem.
pioneer Species
stable mature community in a successive series which has reached equilibrium after having evolved through stages and adapted to its environment
Climax Community
