Q

What is a propeller ?

A

A propeller consists of several twisted blades attached to a central hub spun around by an engine.

34
Q

What are the chord and the pitch ?

A

The chord is the width of a blade.
The pitch is the angle at which the blade is set.

35
Q

What are the three main types of airplanes propellers ?

A
  • Fixed pitch propellers : angle of attach is set and can’t be changed
  • Ground adjustable propellers : pitch can be adjusted on the ground but remain fixed when in flight
  • Variable pitch propellers : pitch can be adjusted in flight

36
Q

What happens when a wing moves through air ?

A

The air on the upper surface moves faster than on the lower surface.

greater speed = low pressure
slower speed = high pressure

37
Q

Complete the sentence :
The faster a propeller spins …

A

The faster a propeller spins, the more air is displaced per unit of time, and the more thrust is created.

38
Q

What’s a way to increase thrust ?

A

By using longer blades.
The greater their spinning are, the more air will be displaced (= more thrust).
We can also add blades to the propeller.

39
Q

What causes the lenght of blades to be limited ?

A
  • the height of the plane’s nose
  • the greater speed is produced, the more sound is produced and loss of efficiency when it reaches Mach 1.
40
Q

How to increase efficiency of the propeller blades ?

A

By using long, thin blades and composite materials to reduce weight.

41
Q

What is the blade pitch ?

A

It’s the angle at which the blade hits the air

42
Q

How is the blade twisted ?

A

The degree of twist varies from a high angle at the root to a shallow angle at the tip. This is because the tip hits the air at a much greater spinning speed than the blade.

43
Q

Width and lenght

A

Largeur et longueur

44
Q

What is a narrow angle ?

A

It’s referred to as a fine pitch that creates less drag because it reduces resistance and requires less engine power to spin.

45
Q

What is a steep angle ?

A

It’s a coarse pitch which makes more drag to spin and requires more engine power. But it creates less drag.

46
Q

What happens once the critical angle of attack is reached ?

A

A stall will occur. In this way, thrust stars lowering and drag increases.

47
Q

What happens to the angle of attack when a plane goes fast ? And when stationary ?

A

The angle of attack is reduced and the angle is perpendicular when stationary.

48
Q

What happens if a plane speed up ?

A

lower blade’s angle of attack into less thrust.

49
Q

How to increase cruise speed ?

A

increase angle of attack into coarser pitch into more thrust
