Vitreous/Retina/Choroid Flashcards
What tunic of the eye delivers nutrients to the outer retina?
Choroid
Where is the choroid thickest?
Nasal and temporal to the fovea
What is the average thickness range of the choroid?
500-2500 microns
What is the name of the specialized capillary bed that is the sole blood supply to the macula?
Choriocapillaris
What is “special” about the choriocapillaris?
Fenestrated with capillaries that are 3-4x wider than normal
How are collagen fibers arranged around the vessels in the choroidal stroma?
Circularly around the vessels
What is the blood supply to the choroid?
Branches of the short posterior ciliary arteries
What is the venous drainage of the choroid?
Venules to the vortex veins
What is the innervation of the choroid?
Nasociliary branch of the trigeminal nerve
What are the sympathetics to the choroid?
From superior cervical ganglion, via the ophthalmic and short ciliary nerves
What does Bruch’s membrane fuse with?
Retina
What is the course of Bruch’s membrane?
Optic nerve to ora; is modified, and continues into the ciliary body
What are the layers of the choroid from inner to outer?
Bruch’s membrane
Choriocapillaris
Sattler’s layer, Haller’s layer
Suprachoroidal lamina
What is found in the choroidal stroma?
Loose CT Melanocytes Fibroblasts Macrophages Lymphocytes Mast cells
The vitreous makes up what percentage of the eye?
80%
The vitreous only interfaces with what?
Basement membranes
What are the 5 attachments of the vitreous from strongest to weakest?
- Vitreous base
- Posterior lens
- Optic disc
- Macula
- Retinal vessels
What is the vitreous base?
Vitreal fibers embedded in the basement membrane of the nonpigmented epithelium of the ciliary body and ILM of retina
What is the extent of the vitreous base?
3mm anterior to ora, 1-3mm posterior to ora, and several mm into the vitreous
