vitreous and retinal detachment Flashcards
why does this occur?
Disorders of the vitreous are very common due to ageing and constant anteroposterior dynamic traction which ultimately result in vitreous detachment. The risk of vitreous
detachment is that it leads to a retinal tear and subsequent retinal detachment.
sx of vitreous detachment
§ Posterior vitreous detachment
§ Sudden onset visual disturbance
§ Floaters, flashing lights
sx of haemorrghaic post. vitreal detachment
orrhagic PVD § Vitreous detachment that causes a retinal tear and/or traction on blood vessel § Floaters and flashing lights § May wake up with it § Refer to eye clinic § Higher risk if high myope
how does retinal detachment occur?
Retinal detachment is almost invariably caused by a retinal tear with subsequent the liquefied
vitreous entering the retinal hole and causing the detachment of the neurosensory retina.
mx
A suspected retinal detachment required an urgent referral to eye clinic.
