conjuctivitis Flashcards
what is conjuctivitis?
Inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva is known as conjunctivitis and is characterized
hyperaemia of the conjunctiva, and typically associated with discharge
features of conjuctivitis
photophobia (particularly if corneal involvement), foreign body sensation and discomfort
how does conjunctivitis spread?
Most infectious conjunctivitis is highly contagious and spreads by droplet, fomites, and hand-toeye inoculation.
what bugs to consider with conjuctivitis?
Other organisms to consider include Neisseria gonorrhoea and Chlamydia trachomatis,
particularly in younger patients with a unilateral conjunctivitis.
Rx for conjuctivitis?
Viral conjunctivitis is usually self-limiting, supportive treatment with lubricants can be
considered. Severe cases benefit from topical steroid cases (however corneal
involvement in herpetic blepharo-conjunctivitis must be ruled out).
• Allergic conjunctivitis requires supportive treatment and oral supplementation of antiallergy medication (e.g. loratadine, cetirizine)
• Bacterial conjunctivitis is treated with antibiotic drops or ointment (e.g. chloramphenicol)
