age-related macular degeneration Flashcards
1
Q
2 types?
A
dry and wet
2
Q
dry AMD
A
Dry AMD (90%) causes retinal pigmentation changes, yellow spots (drusen), and areas of chorioretinal atrophy (referred to as geographic atrophy). There is currently no treatment for dry AMD.
3
Q
wet AMD
A
Wet AMD (10% but accounts for majority of the legal blindness caused by AMD) begins as dry
AMD. Choroidal neovascularization (abnormal new vessel formation) occurs under the retina.
Localised macular oedema or haemorrhage may elevate an area of the macula or cause a
localised retinal pigment epithelial detachment. Eventually, neovascularization causes an
elevated scar under the macula. Treatment is with anti-VEGF injections.
