Vitamins Flashcards
What are some deficiency effects of Vitamin A (Retinoic acid)?
Blindness, infections, stunted grows
What are some deficiency effects of Vitamin D (Calciferol)?
Rickets (softening and weakening of bones in children), osteomalacia (softening and weakening of bones), AND softening of teeth, delayed dentition, enamel hypocalcification, loss of alveolar bone
What are some deficiency effects of Vitamin E (Tocopherol)?
RBC breakage, nerve damage
What are some deficiency effects of Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)?
Beriberi (wet - heart problems and dry - loss of feeling, partial paralysis, confusion), and neurological problems
What are some effects of Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) deficiency?
Inflammation of the mouth and skin
What are some effects of Vitamin B3 (Niacin) deficiency?
Pellagra (inflamed skin, diarrhea, sores in mouth)
What are some effects of Vitamin B9 (Folate) deficiency?
Anemia (pale skin, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath) birth defects
What are some effects of Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency?
Anemia, irreversible nerve damage, and paralysis
What are some effects of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) deficiency?
Scurvy (fatigue, bleeding gingiva, periodontal pockets, impaired healing)
What should not be taken with steroid medications to reduce inflammation? Why?
Vitamin D (calciferol). Leads to reduced calcium absorption and ultimately loss of bone
What are the best sources of Vitamin E (tocopherol)? What can easily break down vitamin E in foods?
fresh foods. Cooking/heating because heating and oxidation easily break it down
What are 2 functions Vitamin B9 (Folate)?
- Aids in synthesis of DNA and RNA
- Has a supportive function with Vitamin B12 (cobalamin)
What mineral does Vitamin C protect? What effect does this have?
Vitamin C protects all vitamins from oxidation and mineral-wise Iron, enhancing its absoprtion.
