How is Vitamin E Absorbed/Digested?
1) Tocopherols and Tocotrienols (Natural) Vitamin E’s get their fatty acid removed by lipases, then as they enter the small intestine bile is released and 50% is absorbed by passive diffusion in the Jejunum
2) Once absorbed by the small intestine it is all packed into chylomicrons and sent to the liver
How is Vitamin E stored?
90% in Adipose tissue (plasma membrane)
What is the function of Vitamin E in the body?
Antioxidant
- donates hydrogen to free radicals
What is the best source of Vitamin E?
Plant oils (Canola oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, nuts etc..)
who is at risk for Hypovitaminosis E
Patients with Fatty Malabsorption Disorders
Premature Infants
What are the symptoms of Hypovitaminosis E
Myopathy, peripheral neuopathy, loss of coordination, loss of tendon reflexes, hemolytic anemia (premature infants)
