Vital signs Flashcards
whart are the 4 main vital signs
BP, Pulse, RR, Temperature, (pain)
normla BP
120/80
systole: 90-140
diastole: 60-90
high blood pressure
hypertension
low blood pressure
hypotension
pulsus paradoxus
decrease in BP during measured procedure (10mmHg or more decrease in BP)
Pulse pressure
systole- diastole
<30 means poor perfusion
Normal Temperature
37C
Where to measure Temperature
axillary, oral, ear, rectal
low body temperature, low metabolic rate, decreased RR and HR
hypothermia
high body termperature, increased metabolic rate, increase RR and HR
hyperthermia
febrile
fever
Normal RR
12-20/min
apnea
absence of spontaneous breathing
eupnea
normal
bradypnea
slow breaths; less than 12/min
tachypnea
fast RR; more than 20/min
hypopnea
shallow breaths
hyperpnea
deep breaths
sighing resps
normal rate and depth with periodic deep and audible breaths
Intermitent breathing
periods of apnea, shallow breaths, deep breaths; irregular breaths
dyspnea
difficulty breathing
Orthopnea
dyspnea when lying down
How to reileve orthopnea
high fowler’s
Trepopnea
Dyspnea when lying down on one side and not the other
Platypnea
Dsypnea when standing or sitting
Orthodeoxia
Desating when sitting up
relieved when lying down
hyperventilation
increased RR and/or depth of breathing to remove CO2
hypoventilation
decreased RR and/or depth
air hunger
extreme shortness of breath
Symptoms
Patient description/ subjective
Signs
objective/ measurable
how much does O2 consumption and CO2 production increase per 1C elevation
10%/ 1C
Hypothermia signs and symptoms
low T, shivering, peripheral vasoconstriction, reduced metabolism, slow and shallow breathing
Strong and weak pulses
pulsus alterans
Ways to take pulse
radial, brachial, femoral, carotid
Normal pulse
60-100bpm
narrow cuff, tight cuff, excessive pressure, inflation from last measurement… gives rise to what error in measuring BP?
higher than true value
too wide or large cuff gives rise to what error in measurement of BP
lower than true value
Occurs when intrathoracic pressure pushes left side of heart making it unable to pump out blood effectively
Pulsus paradoxus
