Visual systems Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 layers in the retina called?
A
- ganglion cell layer
- nuclear cell layer
- photoreceptors
2
Q
Differences between rods and cones
A
Rods are more sensitive to light, and are more abundant in the periphery of the retina
Cones enable us to see colour and are more abundant in the fovea
3
Q
What are the 4 main stages of phototransduction?
A
- Light bleaches rhodopsin
- Transducin is activated
- PDE is activated
- PDE activity decreases the cGMP level
- Na+ channels shut= membrane hyperpolarises
4
Q
Difference between on and off bipolar cells
A
ON- depolarises in response to light have metabotropic receptors OFF- hyperpolarises in response to light have ionotropic receptors
5
Q
What are the main differences (in responses) between the centre and the surround of the receptive field?
A
Centre-
direct input from photoreceptors
bipolar cells behave normally
Surround-
indirect input from photoreceptors through horizontal cells
bipolar cells behave in the opposite way to usual
