visual perception Flashcards
what sort of world do we see
we dont see a 1:1 mapping of the world rather a complex representation of it
how can we study perception
either directly through brain imaging and electrophysiology or indirectly through psychophysics (things like patterns and illusions)
what is the visual system hierarchy
cones - bipolar cells - retinal ganglion cells - V1 - V2 - V3
what is the retina
contains light sensitive cells (cones and rods) and is used to recieve and organise info
what is the LGN
lateral geniculate nucleus. located in thalamus. its a relay centre that receives info from retina
what is the primary visual cortex
otherwise known as V1. Located in occupital lobe in primary cerebral cortex. it recieves integrates and processes visual info from the retina
transduced
is the process of the absorption of light and is translated into electrical signal which reaches the brain
what are rods
located in retina. it percieves size shape and brightness of a visual image
what are cones
also located in retina. they need a lot of light to work they are used to see colour. there are three types of cones sensitive to s,m,l wavelenghts
what is the foeva
a small area in the back of the eye helps with sharpness and detail
what is intercellular signalling cascade
amplifies a signal originating extracellularly and changes it
what is a bipolar cell
its a main interneurone provides major pathways from photoreceptor to ganglion cell
what is the ganglion cell
major output cell of retina bundles together to form optic nerve which carries visual images
what is vision. what is its job
vision is an active system its job is to find the important info e.g. ripe fruit and disregard the other info that we don’t need otherwise we can become overloaded
