Visual Perception Flashcards
Processing Visual Information
Stimulus energy –> Reception –> Transduction –> Transmission –> Organisations and interpretation
Sensation
Process which our sensory receptors detect and respond to sensory information that stimulate them.
Perception
Process which gives meaning to our sensory information
Process of perception
Reception–>Transduction–>Transmission–> Interpretation
Reception
Process of detecting and responding to all sensory information.
Transduction
change the energy from the sensory information into neural impulses to the brain
Transmission
sending sensory information as neural impulses to the area of the brain that is relevant to the info.
Interpretation
the sensory information is given meaning, which we can understand.
Depth Perception
ability to accurately estimate the distance of objects and to perceive the world in 3D
Depth Cues
Monocular and Binocular, to judge how far away objects are spatially located
Binocular
2 eyes, close objects, convergence and retinal disparity
Monocular
1 eye, Accommodation and 5 pictorial cues
Linear Perspective
convergence of parallel lines as they disappear into the distance.
Interposition
partially covered object is seen as further away than the object that covers it.
Texture Gradient
reduction of detail on a surface as it recedes into the distance.
Relative Size
perceive objects with largest image as the closest and those with smallest retina image as further away.
Height in the visual field
Location in relation to horizon: objects closer to the horizon are perceived as further away from us.
Gestalt Principles
Ways which we organise the features of a visual scene, by grouping them to perceive as unified.
Figure ground
dividing the scene into a ‘figure’ which stands out from the ‘ground.’
Closure
fill up or ignore gaps in an image and perceive them as a whole
Similarity
perceive parts that have similar features as belonging in a group/whole.
Proximity
o perceive an image that are positioned close together as belonging together in a group.
Conformity
to adjust one thought or behaviour in ways that are in agreement with those of a particular individual or group
Factors Affecting Conformity:
Group Size, Unanimity, Culture, Shift in attention
Perceptual set
readiness; to perceive something in accordance with what we expect it to be
Context
the setting or environment which can influence a perception of visual stimuli.
