Visual Elements Flashcards
Name types of lines and what they do
Actual Line: zips ( I I ) are actual lines
Implied lines: we dectect as viewers but the artist doesn’t include. More engaging and can be directional
Lines formed by edges: ig. two walls edges put together
What are the different functions of a line?
- Descriptive lines: describes outline and form/ describes or implies movement
ex: alexander calder wires sculpture - Create texture of pattern
- hatching /// Cross-hatching
What are Characteristics of line ?
- Direction: where its going
2. Linear Quality: how does it look where it’s going
What is shape?
Flat, 2D but can give illusion of 3D form
what is form? Can be: -open and \_\_\_\_\_ - \_\_\_\_\_ or dynamic - have interior or exterior \_\_\_\_\_\_ - be \_\_\_\_\_ or subtractive
3D- ranges from low and high relief to full-round sculptures Can be: -open and close - static or dynamic - have interior or exterior contours - be additive or subtractive
What is space ?
artists can give the illusion of 3D space in 2D through
- “Figure-ground” relationship- gets brain involved
- Placement (higher, lower or overlap)
- scale change (big=close/ small=far)
- atmospheric perspective (detailed=close)
- inuitive/divergent perspective : what we get before linear perspective
- Linear Perspective: one point, two point)
- Point of view
what are the types of texture?
Actual texture or simulated
Light can be _____ and _______.
simulated and reflect surfaces
What is value?
relative lightness or darkness of an area
What are the types of color?
every color choice is a choice
Local Color: expected to be in the world
Atmospheric color: color of something in nature
Interpretive color
Describe time
- nearly all object are affected by time
- times essential element of any object that moves or is emphemeral
- some objects purposely features changes over time ( grow, shift, blink)
- some objects imitate changes over time
Describe motion in artworks
-Artworks can move on their own, or incorporate
the viewer’s motion
-Time is an essential element of
any object that moves (kinetic sculpture, film, etc.)
-some objects imitate or express motion
-objects that express or depict motion are often
seen as expressing modernity (the now)
Local Value
value as they appear in relaity
Interpretive value
values manipulated to express something
