He try’s to escape the thought of death, but he knows at some point he has to. He uses repetition to emphasise how much he doesn’t want to admit it and come to terms with dying and try’s at all costs to avoid feeling.

He is in awe of the nurses and admires how they can still work after they have witnessed so many deaths . He can’t deal with one person being ill how can they deal with so many.

A

Metaphor, emphasises the strong smell of the hospital and how it is a memorable smell of discomfort and stress.

A

Metaphor, comparing her hand to a flower emphasises the illness and weakness of the woman. He uses IT which suggests he think she is like an empty shell.
