Vision (Week 9) Flashcards
3 foundations for higher levels of visual function?
VA, VF, oculomotor control
Myopia
nearsightedness
Hyperopia
farsightedness
3 stages of visual function (Colendbrander model)
optic
retinal
neural
loss of accommodation of lens?
Presbyopia
People w/Diabetic retinopathy may have good VA but reduced?
contrast sensitivity
2nd leading cause of blindness in US
glaucoma
1st leading cause of blindness in US
macular degeneration
Damage to visual pthwys beyond the organ of eye?
Hemianopic visual field
Test of gross VF deficit?
confrontation testing (“Watch my finger”)
2 gaze shifting mvmts
saccades
pursuits
Quick scanning eye mvmts?
saccades (ex. eye mvmt on subway)
smooth pursuits?
Track and follow moving target
Binocular vision depends on 2 things?
eye alignment
accomnodation
Ability of lens to strengthen its optical power so that close objects are seen clearly?
accommodation (declines after 40 yo)
Typically w/right parietal lobe damage and believed to be attention-based processing impairment and not an eye or visual system impairment?
UN
Representational neglect?
Disregard of the CON side of mental visualizations of a task, action, or environment
Can not make connection that CON side of their body is actually theirs?
Personal neglect
3 main features of hemi-inattention?
o Generalized difficulty with alertness and attention
o Spatial bias to IPS side
o Difficulty forming a mental representation of space that includes the involved side
Most frequent complaint in clients w/vision impairment
reading difficulty
What is Peripersonal space visual search and how is it assessed?
- Search of area immediately surrounding the body
- assessments are paper/pencil (draw clock)
What is Extrapersonal space visual search and how is it assessed?
- The area that extends beyond arm’s reach and represents the larger environment through which an individual moves
- can assess by going to a quiet hallway in clinic and ask then to find scattered items
What is eccentric viewing?
Low Vision Intervention for people w/ central vision impairment learn to use their peripheral vision as an alternate viewing area
What is COPE and what does it stand for?
- organizational strategy
o Consistency:
o Order items:
o Pair like items:
o Establish routines:
