Q

Corneal Disorders

A

Corneal abrasion -> corneal infection -> corneal ulceration

Assess: pain, vision changes, secretions, photophobia, mechanism of injury

Diagnose: with ‘silt lamp’

Intervention: eye drops- anti infective or steroids

9
Q

Retinal Disorders (Holes, tears, detachment)

A

Alteration in the continuity between the retina and the epithelium

May lead to blindness

Assess:
Risk - trauma, age, eye surgery
S/S - flashes of light, floaters

Intervention:
Seek care, surgery may be needed
No treatment needed sometimes

Q

Cataract

A

Lens opacity

Cause: aging, DM, glaucoma, eye trauma, retinal detachment, chronic sun exposure

Assess: gradual loss of vision, no pain or eye redness, cloudy lens late in progression, progresses to blindness

Intervention: surgery

Q

Development of glaucoma

A

Forward displacement of iris
Iris presses against cornea
Reduction of outflow of aqueous humor
Inc intraocular pressure
Irreversible damage to optic nerve due to tissue ischemia
Blindness

12
Q

Primary open angle Glaucoma

A

Angle between lens and cornea is open and some movement of fluid to be reabsorbed

Most common

Assess: gradual loss of vision, seeing halos

13
Q

Primary angle closure glaucoma

A

Angle between lens and cornea closed, no movement of fluid to be reabsorbed

More severe

Assess: sudden severe pain, headache, brow pain, N/V, halos around light, sudden blurred vision with decreased light perception

14
Q

Glaucoma Meds

A

Prostaglandin agonists (latanoprost)
- reduce IOP; collects and drains aqueous humor faster
- eye color darkens and lashes elongate
Beta Adrenergic Blockers (timolol)
- reduce IOP; limit production of aqueous humor and improves absorption
- if taking oral beta blockers, monitor HR and BP
- if diabetic, check glucose often
- do not take with asthma or COPD

16
Q

Ear hair changes with aging

A

Increased hair in ear canal
May cause wax build up
May require irrigation

17
Q

Hearing acuity changes with aging

A

Hearing acuity is decreased sometimes
Do not assume all older adults have dec hearing acuity
Refer to specialist if needed

18
Q

Sound changes with age

A

Change in high frequency sounds (f, s, sh, pa)
-quiet environment
-glasses enhance hearing
-speak in a deeper voice
-hearing aids

19
Q

Otitis Media

A

Infection of middle ear causes inflammation and purulent exudate
- can perforate tympanic membrane, leading to scarring and hearing loss
- more common in young children

Assess: pain, fever, dizziness, purulent/bloody discharge from ear, N/V, bulging of tympanic membrane via otoscope

Implement: antibiotics (rare), analgesics, surgery
