Ask about eye conditions (5)
Aphakia - no eye lens Retinopathy Cataracts Glaucoma Macular degeneration
Corrective lenses not allowed by the FMCSA
Lenses that correct distance vision in one eye and bear vision in the other
Telescopic lenses - magnifies objects
Minimum for snellen chart
20/40 in each eye
With or without corrective lenses
Disqualifying vision condition
Monocular vision- meeting requirements in one eye but not the other
Horizontal field of vision test
70 degrees in left and right eye
Not disqualifying vision conditions
Meets vision requirements
Lazy eye
Glaucoma
Cataract
Macular degeneration
Untreatable blindness Interferes with central vision Increases with age Slow and subtle effects 10% malignant with rapid loss Peripheral vision is spared Snellen chart will detect Telescopic lenses detect
Glaucoma
Causes defects in peripheral vision Atrophy of optic nerve cells Loss of peripheral visual field May affect redirection vision, night vision, color vision Snellen not affected Peripheral horizontal vision affected
Diabetic retinopathy
Non-inflammatory retina defects
Sig. Effect after 5-7 years
Leads to scotomas in central vision,
Hemorrhages lead to retinal detachment blindness
Affected- contrast sensitivity, flicker fusion frequency, color discrimination
Delayed with strict control of comorbidities
Guidelines:
Annual exam
Annual ophthalmologist or optometrist evaluation
Disqualifying proliferation retinopathy
Monocular vision
Disqualifying
May be considered for federal exemption if otherwise fit
