Viscosity, Adhesion, Cohesion Flashcards
If the the fluid flows slow, Is the viscosity greater or lesser?
Greater
Why do some fluids flow faster than other fluids?
-there particles are made of different shapes and sizes so some particles can flow past eachother with greater ease than other particles
-force of attraction between particles. The
PArticles are attracted more strongly to each other than the particle in other fluids are
What is a good example of how shape can produce different viscosities and why?
Water and oil because oil molecules have a complicated shape which makes it for the molecules to move past eachother where as water molecules are more simple and smaller, so they can flow past eachother with greater ease
How can you compare the viscosity of two fluid?
Comparing there flow rate
Flow rate?
The speed at which a fluid flows from one point to another
Why is it hard to start your car on cold Canadian mornings?
The oil that lubricates the engine can become very stiff and resistant to flow under cold conditions. When the oil is resistant to flow, it is difficult for the parts of the motor to move.
Does viscosity play a bigger role I gases or liquids?
Liquids
Why do fluids play a bigger role in liquids than gases?
Gases have much more spaces between particles, so the interaction between particles cannot cause a resistance to flow. Water particles are closer together. The size and shape of liquid particles and attraction between particles contribute to friction. Friction slows the rate at which a fluid can flow.
What happens when a liquid is heated?
Heated…particles farther apart…less attraction between particles….less friction… Viscosity decreases
Liquid cooled?
Cooled…particles closer together…increased attraction between particles… More friction…viscosity increases
Gas heated ?
Heated…particles farther apart…particles move faster… More collisions, more friction, viscosity increase
Gas cooled?
Cooled…particles move closer…particles move slower…fewer collisions, less friction…viscosity decreases
Adhesion?
Attraction or joining of two different objects or fluids to each other
Polarity?
One end of each particle is slightly positive and the other end is slightly negative
Cohesion?
Strength with which the particles of an object or fluid attract each other
