Forces Flashcards
What’s a force?
A push or pull that acts on an object
What are the 4 basic results when u apply a force to a object?
- start an objects moving
- change an objects direction
- stop an objects motion
- change am objects shape
What’s a contact force?
Forces that can only affect an object by making contact with it
What are the types of contact forces?
- tension force
- friction force
- elastic force
What’s a friction force?
A stopping force between 2 surfaces that try to slide past one another
What’s a tension force?
A pulling force experienced by an object when:
- one end is fixed, the other is pulled
- both ends are pulled no opportune directions
What’s a elastic force?
A stretching force when an object is stretched or compressed then Returns to its original size and shape
What are the 2 catagories of forces?
Action-at-a-distance forces
Contact forces
What is a action-at-a-distance force?
Forces that can affect objects without touching it
What are they types of action-at-a-distance forces?
Gravitational force
Electrostatic force
Magnetic force
What’s a gravitational force?
An attractive force between 2 objects that have mass
- the more mass an object has the more gravity it has
- gravity also depends on distance
What is electrostatic force?
A push or pull caused by static electricity
What I’d magnetic force?
A push or pull due to natural magnetism or due to man made electromagnetism
How do u measure mass and give does it work?
Using balance
- the unknown object is places on one side and is compared to a know mass on the other
- when the 2 sides are balanced, the amount of mass used to balance them is the mass of the unknown object
What happens to a objects mass when u move it from one place to another?
NOTHINGGGG
What is weight?
The amount of force on an object due to gravity
WHen gravity increased does ur weight increase or decrease?
Weight increased
What did directly proportional mean?
When values increase or decrease together
What is force measured in
Newtons
What is a Newton?
Named after sir issac Newton, the unit of measure for force
What is a force meter?
A device that uses a spring or other elastic material that stretches of compresses to measure the strength of a pulling or pushing force
What are other words could be used to decried a force meter?
Force gauge
Dynamometer
What is a spring scale ?
A spring, with a hook attached to one end, that stretches to show the amount of force being applied
What is a balanced force?
Forces that are equal in strength but opposite in direction
