Pressure Flashcards
Compression?
Decrease in volume produced by a force
Why can bases be easily compressed?
Because there are lots of space between there particles
How much percent of the volume of a gas made up of particles?
Less than 1 percent
How do u compress a gas?
Put gas in a container and apply force to it
What would happen if gas trapped inside of a container is heated?
An increase in pressure will happen and the fast moving particle will bounce off the sides of the container causing an explosion
What’s an implosion?
A collapse inwards
Why do things implode?
Because the pressure outside the object is greater than the air pressure inside
Why is it almost impossible to compress a liquid or a solid?
Because there particles are packed so close together
Solids and liquids are described as incompressible, what does that mean?
Can’t be compressed using normal means
Solids can also appear to be compressed when they are __________
Deformed
Deformation?
A change of shape without being forced into a smaller volume
What is pressure?
The amount of force applied over a given area on an object
By spreading force over a greater area , pressure can be ______
Reduced
Pressure formula?
Pressure=f/a (force/ area)
What are common units used in pressure calculations?
Newtons (N) for force and square meters for area (m2)
