Viruses Flashcards
Viruses
Intracellular parasite that cannot replicate on their own. Reproduce by infecting host cells and usurping the cellular machinery to produce more virus particles. Consist only of either RNA or DNA.
Viroids
smallest infectious pathogens known, larger only than prions, which are misfolded proteins. Consist solely of short strands of circular, single-stranded RNA without protein coats.
Prions
infectious agent made entirely of proteins that can fold in multiple different ways.. Extremely small and contains no nucleic acids.
Virion
a complete viral particle, consisting of RNA or DNA surrounded by a protein coat and constituting the infective form of a virus. Consists of genetic material, protein coat, and envelope of lipids surrounding protein coat.
Capsid
protein shell of a virus.
