Proteins Flashcards
Peptide bond
Joins amino acids together between the alpha carboxyl group or one amino acid and the alpha amino group of a second.
Primary structure
The main amino acid sequence that forms that base for the structures that build on the top of its polypeptide chain.
Secondary structure
Regular arrangement of amino acids in localized regions of the polypeptide. H-bonding between backbone partial charges. There are two types: alpha helix and beta sheet.
Tertiary structure
has a single polypeptide chain “backbone” with one or more protein secondary structures and the protein domains. Describes the overall folding of a single polypeptide chain as a result of interactions between the side chains of amino acids that lie in different region of the primary sequence.
Quaternary structure
Associations between separate structures (polypeptide chains) in proteins composed of more than one polypeptide subunits.
alpha-helix
Keratin (in hair skin and nails). Alpha helix is spiral shaped and are the only structures that can penetrate the membrane.
Beta-sheet
Rigid structures at the core of proteins. Can be parallel or antiparallel. Formed between several polypeptide strand, which can be oriented in either the same or opposite directions.
