Q

Secondary structure

A

Regular arrangement of amino acids in localized regions of the polypeptide. H-bonding between backbone partial charges. There are two types: alpha helix and beta sheet.

Q

Tertiary structure

A

has a single polypeptide chain “backbone” with one or more protein secondary structures and the protein domains. Describes the overall folding of a single polypeptide chain as a result of interactions between the side chains of amino acids that lie in different region of the primary sequence.

Q

alpha-helix

A

Keratin (in hair skin and nails). Alpha helix is spiral shaped and are the only structures that can penetrate the membrane.

Q

Beta-sheet

A

Rigid structures at the core of proteins. Can be parallel or antiparallel. Formed between several polypeptide strand, which can be oriented in either the same or opposite directions.
