Viruses Flashcards
1
Q
What is a virus?
A
a non living particle that causes sickness
2
Q
Structure of a virus
A
no cell membrane
protein coat (capsid)
genetic materials
3
Q
Viruses are non-living because…?
A
no metabolism
no energy production
does not respond to stimuli
4
Q
what is the shape of a virus?
A
cubic
spherical
cylindrical
5
Q
what are the names of the two cycles in which viruses reproduce?
A
Lytic cycle
Lysogenic cycle
6
Q
Describe the Lytic Cycle
A
- bacteriophage attach to cell wall
- enzymes release to dissolve the wall
- injects virus DNA into the host
- DNA takes over and replicates
- destroys host
7
Q
Describe the Lysogenic cycle
A
- Bacteriophage attach to cell wall
- dissolve wall
- inject DNA into host
- DNA combines with host in a manner that does not interfere with host cell
- slowly takes down host
8
Q
What do vaccines do?
A
they inject a small amount of the virus so your body can produce antibodies to fend off the real thing later
