Q

structure and functions of bacteriophage? (7)

A

head- contains the nucleic acid
Nucleic acid- DNA contain genetic material for reproduction
protein capsid- protects genetic material in the head
collar
sheath
base plate- in contact and transmits nucleic material to host
Pins- attach to host cell

Q

explain lyctic bacteriophage reproduction

A

bacteriophage attach to host cells with pins and genetic material injected through sheath and base plate into the cell. the genetic material within the host cell constructs new components of bacteriophages. bacteriophages construct within host cell and then burst out of host cell to infect new cells.

Q

explain lysogenic bacteriophage reproduction

A

bacteriophage attach to host cells with pins and genetic material injected through sheath and base plate into the cell. the DNA integrates with the dna of the host cell. host cell divides and its dna replicates along with viral dna. virus will be activated when triggered.

Q

acronym HIV/ Aids and how it works?

A

human immunodeficiency disease
acquired immune deficiency syndrome
HI virus with RNA within human attacks CD4 white blood cells and destroys them. this weakens immune systems .

Q

symptoms, transmission, prevention and treatment of HIV

A

symptoms: TB, pneumonia, diarrhea, weight loss, sweating
transmission: sex, blood transfusions and mother to child
preventions: dont share hypodermic needles, use condoms and gloves for treating patients
Treatment: PeP treatment: every 28 days for rape or accidents
anti retroviral drugs slow down HI virus reproduction
