Viruses Flashcards
1
Q
Virus
A
- not alive
- pieces of genetic material in a protein cover.
- smaller than a cell
- do not do any of the processes of life.
2
Q
Virus Structure
A
- consist of genetic material –DNA or RNA
- have an outer coating of lipids called an envelope.
3
Q
Lytic Cycle
A
- actively replicating cycle
- begins replication process immediately and kills cells quickly.
- ex// bacteriophage
4
Q
Attachment
A
the virus has to attach to a specific receptor on the host cell
5
Q
Entry
A
virus has its genetic information directly injected into the host cell.
6
Q
Replication
A
the metabolism of the cells is used to replicate that viral genetic material and proteon capsid.
7
Q
Assembly
A
all parts of the virus are assembled into functional viral units.
8
Q
Lysis and Release
A
the cell bursts open and created viruses are able to infect more cells.
9
Q
Lysogenic Cycle
A
dormant cycle
10
Q
Lytic and Lysogenic Cycle
A
- enters lytic cycle and remains dormant
- viral genetic information is incorporated into the host genome to form provirus.
- when the host cell reptoduces, it also copies the viral DNA or RNA into its daughter cells.
- ex//HIV or herpes
11
Q
How are viruses treated/prevented?
A
through shots/vaccinations
12
Q
Examples or Viruses
A
- influenza viruses
- varicella zaster
- herpes simplex virus
- norovirus
