Bacteria Flashcards
1
Q
Bacteria
A
prokaryotic unicellular microorganisms ranging in length from a few miccrometers to half a millimeter.
2
Q
Eukaryotes
A
contains nucleus
3
Q
Prokaryotes
A
no nucleus
4
Q
Common structural elements of bacteria
A
- Cell Wall
- Plasma Membrane
- Cytoplasm
- Ribosome
- Plasmid
- Flagella
- Pili
- Capsule
5
Q
How bacteria are classified?
A
- based on their shapes and how the colonies they form
- shapes: bacillus(rod), coccus(round), spirillum(spiral)
- configurations: diplo-(in pairs), strepto-(in chains), straphylo-(in cluster)
6
Q
Good uses of bacteria/helpful bacteria
A
- Making drugs, such as antibiotics and vaccines.
- create food products such as cheese, yoghurt, pickles, soy sauce and vinegar.
7
Q
Binary Fission
A
- asexual reproduction
- maid method of reproduction which allows bacteria to quickly multiply
8
Q
Conjugation
A
- sexual reproduction
- some have circular-looped chromosomes
- some have smaller loops called plasmids
- conjugate by forming a link using their pili
9

Examples of Bacteria
A
- streptococcus pyogenes
- staphylococcus aureus
- e.coli
- acinetobacter baumannii
- clostridium botulinum
