Virus Life Cycle Flashcards
What is the name of the cycle that causes lysis, and releases more viruses from cells?
Lytic cycle
What is the name of the cycle where the viral genetic material is inserted into a bacterial chromosome?
Lysogenic cycle
What is lysis?
The destruction of the host cell when the viruses break out of the cell
How does a virus reproduce?
They take over a living cell’s processes to make and assemble new genetic material and proteins
What are viruses made up of?
One or more strands of genetic material surrounded by a protein coat
Why are viruses not classified as living?
Because they cannot reproduce on their own - they need to take over a living cell to reproduce
How do you calculate the actual size of an object through a microscope?
Image size divided by magnification equals actual size
What happens in the lysogenic cycle?
The virus’ genetic material inserts itself into the chromosomal dna so when it reproduces asexually, the offspring cells also have the genetic material which can also remove itself from the chromosomal dna to begin the lytic cycle
