Plant Diseases And Defences Flashcards
How is chalara ash dieback spread?
It is spread by the wind
How is the spread of chalara ash dieback limited?
Removing debris from clothing before leaving the area and quarantining infected trees.
What are the symptoms of low mineral concentration in soil?
Less minerals being absorbed causing deficiencies.
What are a plant’s main defence?
Cuticle
What is a cuticle?
A physical barrier on plants that is a waxy layer which is tough for pathogens to get past
What are physical barriers not good against?
Animals, mainly herbivores
What do chemical barriers in plants do?
They poison or deter animals and pathogens when attacked
How do some fungi get past the cuticle in plants?
They produce threads that pass through the skin and take the nutrients from the cell
How can insects carry disease between plants?
They can take the infection when they land on infected plants and carry it onto other plants whin they feed off of them
Why are organisms more vulnerable when there is a cut in the physical barrier?
Because there is a way directly into the organism
