Selective Breeding Flashcards
An agricultural use:
Produce bigger yield
Medical use:
To perform studies on behaviour
What does inbreeding cause?
It causes genetic defects
A danger of selective breeding
Reduces gene pool
What can a reduced gene pool cause?
Inbreeding and a lower chance of resistance to new diseases
How can selective breeding be used on plants?
To produce bigger fruit or yield
How can it be used on farm animals?
It can produce more meat or milk
How can selective breeding be used on dogs?
Produce offspring with better temperament
What is selective breeding?
When the plants or animals are artificially selected to breed so particular characteristics remain in the population
How is selective breeding done?
1) select the organisms with the wanted characteristics
2) breed them with each other
3) select the best offspring and breed them
4) repeat the process so the desired characteristic remains in the population and gets stronger
