Antigenic Drift vs shift

A

Drift-slight changes in H or N antigens which do not change the type of antigen thru random mutations. Shift-Animals serve as pool where reassortment with other flu viruses can occur, changes antigen (eg H1->H2), esp in pigs

A

H-binding to sialic acid on cell surface. N-cleaves sialic acid so mature virus can be released
