Viral resp. disease Flashcards
1
Q
What are the top three URI-causing viruses?
A
Rhinovirus (69%), Coronavirus (15%), RSV (1%)
2
Q
How many viruses are there of each subtype?
A
H (1-14), N (1-9); In humans H (1-3), N (1-2)
3
Q
Antigenic Drift vs shift
A
Drift-slight changes in H or N antigens which do not change the type of antigen thru random mutations. Shift-Animals serve as pool where reassortment with other flu viruses can occur, changes antigen (eg H1->H2), esp in pigs
4
Q
What do Hemaglutinin and neuramididase do?
A
H-binding to sialic acid on cell surface. N-cleaves sialic acid so mature virus can be released
