Pneumoconiosis Flashcards
Histology and CXR of chronic silicosis
well-formed, hylainized layered collagen with capsule in upper lobes. Hilar LN w/ eggshell calcification
what is the pathology of pneumonconiosis
Macrophages eat dust, produce ROS, epithelial cell apoptosis, release of of factors by T cells, myofibroblast stimulated to produce collagen
What do you see on PFTs when you have severe fibrosis?
decreased volumes, decreased DICO
How do symptoms of silica, coal, asbestos compare?
In advanced stages, silica ppl have more cough, dyspnea, abnormal FVC’s and DICO
What do you see on HRCT of acute silicosis
Crazy paving (ground glass, septal thickening) resulting from alveolar proteinosis
Is carbon more or less fibrogenic than quartz? what color nodules do they produce?
less. Black vs white
Which one of the three dust ones can lead to COPD?
coal
which asbestos fibers are the most fibrogenic and carcinogenic
crocidolite
Ferruginous bodies
asbestos fibers coated w/ Fe. Redox active
In what ways can asbestos manifest
BAPE (benign asb. pleural effusion), plaques, rounded atelectasis, asbestosis
How do asbestos fibers cause plaques
they plug lymph channel stomata, frustrate phagocytosis, release of factors and ROS
What do asbestos plaques cause?
nothing.
rounded atelectasis
asbestos. pleural fibrosis entraps lung tissue and you see comet tail sign
Which is asbestos related and exacerbated by smoking, lung ca or mesothelioma?
lung CA
what are useful mesotheliioma serum biomarkers?
there are none
