Varicella zoster, Chickenpox, Herpes zoster, Shingles
How do we treat the four viral infections?
Aciclovir / Valaciclovir (pro drug)
At what age are patients more at risk of more serious effects from Chicken Pox?
14+
If someone who is aged 14+ gets chicken pox, what should they take?
An antiviral 24 hours after onset.
What should you never give someone with Chickenpox?
Ibuprofen - can cause serious skin reactions
What are the common symptoms of herpes and shingles?
Tingling sensation, burning and fluid filled blisters
What is a common characteristic of Shingles?
It will follow the pattern of individual nerves on one side of your body and can end up looking like a belt/half belt around rib cage of torso.
