Viral Diseases Flashcards
What are the 3 viral diseases
Measles
HIV
TMV
What is measles
Spread by inhalation of droplets from an infected person’s sneeze or cough
they develop a red skin rash, fever
Can be fatal if there are complications
Can lead to pneumonia (lung infection)
Most people are vaccinated against it when young
What is HIV
Spread by sexual contact, exchanging bodily fluids such as blood
This can happen when sharing needles
Causes flu like symptoms for a few weeks, usually the person doesn’t experience any symptoms for years and during this time HIV can be controlled with antiretroviral drugs
The virus attacks immune cells
How do antiretroviral drugs stop HIV
Stop virus replicating
What happens when the body’s immune system is badly damaged by HIV
it can’t cope with other infections or cancers, this stage the virus is called AIDS
What is tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)
Affects species of plants. Eg tomatoes
It causes a mosaic pattern on the leaves and parts become discolored
The discoloration means the plant can’t carry out photosynthesis properly so it affects growth too
