What is a viral disease?
Any disease caused by a virus
List examples of viral diseases:
•HIV
•Measles
•Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV)
What are the symptoms of TMV?
• a unique mosaic pattern of discolouration on leaves which stunts growth a photosynthesis cannot occur and they cannot make glucose
How is TMV spread?
Through direct contact (wind/water)
How can we prevent TMV from spreading?
• cut and burn (destroy) infected plant and disinfect tools used
What are the symptoms of HIV?
•flu like illness
•depleted immune system as lymph nodes attack body’s own immune system
How is HIV spread?
•through sex
•transfer of body fluids through sharing needles
How can HIV be treated?
Using antiretroviral drugs.
How can a person develop AIDS?
HIV can develop into aids (immune system to weak to defend the body)
What are the symptoms of measles?
•Red Rash
•Fever
How are Measles spread?
Inhaling droplets from sneezes or coughs
How can we treat Measles?
Vaccinate babies and toddlers with MMR vaccine
What does MMR stand for?
Measles, Mumps and Rubella
