Primary Defences Flashcards
What are non specific/ primary defences?
How the body stops pathogens from entering
How does mucus defend the body from pathogens?
•trap air particles that may contain pathogens
•The mucus and pathogens together are moved up together to the top of the trachea by cilia
•The cillia (tiny like hair organelles) sweep upwards removing foreign material
• The pathogens are then swallowed and killed by hydrochloric acid in the stomach
How does skin protect the body?
•Skin acts as a tough physical barrier that pathogens cannot pass through.
•Good bacteria also live on skin
•Good bacteria contain lysozyme which digests and weakens the cell wall of bacterias causing them to die
How does blood clotting prevent pathogens entering?
Stop the loss of blood and prevent the entry of pathogens through wounds in the skin
