Q

State of matter

How do the melting and boiling points tell you about the state of matter?

A

Below the melting point it is solid (like ice)
Between melting and boiling point it is liquid (like water)
Above boiling point is is gas (like steam)

16
Q

How is heat transfered by radiation?

A

Hot objects radiate heat as infrared rays - this is called radiation

17
Q

Radiation is a W—-, a form of energy much like light.

A

Wave

18
Q

Can radiation travel through a vacuum

A

Yes

19
Q

What radiates fastest, hotter or cooler objects?

A

Objects that are hotter radiate faster

20
Q

What is the difference for radiation between Matt lack surfaces and shiny surfaces?

A

Matt black surfaces radiate heat radiation well - they cool quickly

Shiny silvery surfaces are poor radiators of heat - cool slowly

21
Q

What type of surface radiates well and cools quickly?

A

A Matt black surface

22
Q

What kind of surface radiates poorly and cools slowly?

A

Shiny silvery surfaces

23
Q

What type of surface reflects nearly all the heat radiation falling on them?

A

Shiny silvery surfaces

24
Q

What type of surface absorbs nearly all the heat radiation falling on it ?

A

Matt black

25
Q

Svience

What is the cooling curve?

A

This is the rate of heat loss over time but there line curves as the rate of heat loss slows over time. This is because hotter objects radiate more heat and cool more quickly than cooler objects
