Life Colour Flashcards
What are the five kingdoms
Plant Animal Bacteria Protoctista Fungi
Life colour
What do you put over cells for viewing under a microscope?
Coverslip over the cells on a slide
What are living things made from?
Cells
What does it mean to be unicellular?
An organism with only one cell
What do we call An organism with only one cell?
Unicellular
Where might we typically find unicellular (only one cell) organisms?
Water such as ponds, lakes, rivers
What type of organism are amoeba and paramecium?
Unicellular (only one cell)
Give two examples of Unicellular (only one cell) organisms
Amoeba and paramecium
What do we call an organism made up of many cells?
Multicellular
In a multicellular organism, like plants or animals, different cells have different functions
What is a multicellular organism?
An organism made up of more than one cell
In a multicellular organism, like plants or animals, different cells have different functions
What is chromatography?
A separating technique to separate substances with different solubilities
In chromatography how can you tell which dyes have different levels of solubility?
Dyes that are more soluble will travel further up the chromatogram
In chromatography
How do you calculate Rf values?
Rf = distance moved by dye
——————————
distance moved by solvent
In chromatography
What is used to draw the base line and why?
Pencil is used to draw the base line because it is insoluble and will not travel up the paper
In chromatography
The water level must be below the ink spots and pencil line.
Why?
To stop the ink dissolving into the water, so it will on,y travel up the paper
In chromatography
If the ink does not move from the base line, what does that mean?
It isn’t soluble in that solution
It may be soluble in a different solution
In chromatography
What does it mean if the ink doesn’t separate into more than one colour?
It is pure colour and not a mixture of pigments
In chromatography
What does it mean if the spot separates into more than one colour?
The ink is not a pure colour but is a mix of pigments
What is white light made up of?
All the colours of the rainbow and all in between
White light
What do we call all the colours of the rainbow and all in between?
The continuous spectrum
What are the main colours of the rainbow?
Roygbiv Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet
What is it called when a prism splits the colours of white light into the spectrum
Dispersion
What light bends or refracts the most?
Violet
What are the three primary colours?
Red
Green
Blue
