Electricity Flashcards
Electricity What do we call a material that lets electricity pass through easily? E.g. copper, iron and steel
A conductor
Electricity What do we call a material that does not allow electricity to flow easily, such as plastic, rubber, wood and glass?
Insulators
Electricity Why does plastic covering surround electrical wire?
It is an electrical insulator and so prevents you from getting an electric shock.
Electricity What is voltage?
The electrical pressure exerted on a circuit or component and is measured in volts
Electricity What do we call The electrical pressure exerted on a circuit or component and is measured in volts?
Voltage
Electricity What is the unit of voltage?
Volts or v
Electricity Name four things that can provide voltage/ electrical pressure to a circuit?
Cells Batteries Generators Solar cells
Electricity What happens to a bulb and to voltage in a circuit if you add more cells. Say add a 2v cell to a 2 v cell
The voltage increases : 2v + 2 v = 4 v The bulb will be brighter
Electricity How can a bulb tell you about the voltage or electrical pressure in a circuit?
If the bulb is off then there is no voltage The bulb will get brighter as voltage increases and dimmer if voltage decreases
Electricity Why is metal used in plugs?
To allow electricity to transfer from the wall socket, through the plug and to t he device such as tv or Xbox.
Electricity Why do bulbs all go on instantly in a circuit?
Charge is already found in the wires and components The battery provides the push to punch the charge that is there all round the circuit, all moving at once and so the bulbs all go on at once.
Electricity Electricity will only travel round a circuit that is ?????
Complete
Electricity In a circuit things like bulbs, buzzers, motors, switches etc. These are all called ????
Components
What is this the symbol of?
Light emitting diode or LED
