Violence & Sport Flashcards
Erving Goffman
Total Institutions: certain groups and setting operate as all-encompansing socializing agents
Individuals bound by strict ideological and structural code of behaviour that continually monitored by authority figures, group leaders, and other group members
-These codes of behaviour are consented to
Ex: orphanages, psychiatric institutions, prison, military, monasteries
Hockey as a total institution: production of social norms in occupational subculture (how hockey play “preform” hegemonic masculinity
Social norms learned via a process of occupational socialization - in the ‘backstage’ world of hockey where bodies are disciplined and actions are rationalized according to sub-cultural vales
-Rewarded with resources and by accolades from teammates, coaches, fans, and the media
- A retreat from ‘real’ world to occupational
Contextual morality
Contextual morality: sub-cultural norms provide a totalizing context that frees the participants form the responsibility of moral choice
ie: it’s part of the game
Supported by media as ‘common sense’
Ex: Don Cherry’s Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em
2.Cartharsis theory
Fighting provides controlled and symbolic outlets for aggression that might otherwise manifest itself in serious forms
Fighting allows players to police themselves and removes stick work, dirty play due to fear of reprisal
Can’t proper rules prevent infractions as in other sports
Do calls to band fighting threaten hockey’s traditional role as
a training ground for hegemonic masculinity?
