Define the term violence
Violence is the use of physical force against yourself, another person, a group or community.
Can an action be considered violent if it doesn’t cause physical harm? what is it called?
Yes, it could be a threat
In SA what does every person have the right to?
To freedom and security; this includes the right to be free from all forms of violence
What does the South African Bill of Rights state?
That “Every child has the right to be protected from being badly treated, neglected, abused or hurt.”
How is violence affecting our health and safety?
Define Physical Violence
Any action that causes physical harm, and at the extreme, murder of the victim.
How can physical violence occur?
For youth this may mean receiving any sort of beating by an adult, or youth physically assaulting each other or an adult.
Define Emotional Violence
Acts of harassment intended to degrade the victim, exert control over him or her, and stand in the way of their autonomy.
Define Sexual Violence
Subjecting a victim to sexual activity against their will and includes sexually abusing minors.
How can sexual violence occur?
Sexual violence can occur within families. Young people, particular young girls, may experience sexual violence at the hands of peers or adults. Young people may also victimise other youth or adults sexually.
Name the causes of emotional violence ?
Such acts include threats, harassment and intimidation. There are many ways in which young people may experience or perpetrate psychological violence, such as bullying or cyberbullying.
Give 3 examples of how PHYSICAL violence can occur in a schooling environment:
- Some one being kicked or punched during a fight
- Teachers hitting or slapping a student as punishment for something they did wrong
- Students being aggressive in a school hallway by punching/shoving other students
Give 3 examples of how EMOTIONAL violence can occur in a schooling environment:
- Teacher’s insulting a student on their intelligence in front of the class
- Swearing or Yelling at someone
- Spreading rumours about someone
Give 3 examples of how SEXUAL violence can occur in a schooling environment:
- Rape occurring between students and teachers
- Students making sex-related jokes or insults
- Teachers making unwelcome sexual suggestions and hints
Give 3 examples of how PHYSICAL violence can occur in a home
- Children being beaten up by their parents
- Children being locked up in the house and not being allowed to leave
- Forbidding you from eating or sleeping
- Damaging your property when they are angry - kicking doors,throwing objects,smashing glasses
