Causes of violence in sport

A

-Desire to win- desire to win can be overwhelming and impair decision making
-Nature of sport- For example, lots of fights occur in ice hockey and is generally considered to be a violent/ aggressive sport
-Anger- Natural frustration can build up for example, luis suarez biting defenders
-Catharsis - release of energy, can lead to relief of negative emotions
-Rivalries- a match between two rival teams can have a higher level of aggression between players and fans

Consequences of violence in sport

A

Poor role models- Eric Cantona booting a fan and recieving prison time is not a good role model for children or adults
Parents may withdraw their children from a sport with a bad reputation for violence
-Sports with a bad reputation for violence may lose sponsorships as sponsors do not want to be associated with violent figures
-Bans and fines for aggressive acts

Strategies to reduce violence in sport

A

-Education-teach players/coaches/parents/fans about the consequences of violence and its implications
-Positive role models- promote non violent role models and use them to spread non violent behaviour
-Stricter punishments- stricter bans and fines to prevent violence from players and fans
-Increased use of CCTV- Acts of violence can be recorded and prosecuted for, also acts as a deterrent
