Deviance- Unacceptable behaviour in a culture that differs from social or legal norms i.e gambling or violence
Types of PEDs
Anabolic steroids- resembles natural testosterone hormone
Beta blockers- slows down heart
Stimulants- increased awareness
Diuretics- urination of illegal substances out of the body
Masking agents- Disguises illegal substances within the body
Peptide hormones- Stimulates muscle growth and repair
Types of performance enhancing methods
-Blood doping
-Gene doping
-Oxygen transport enhancement
Legal supplements for enhancing performance
-Caffeine
-Nitrate
-Creatine
-Bicarbonate
Legal Methods for enhancing performance
-Heat therapy
-Glycogen loading
-Gels
-Cooling aids
Reasons for taking PEDs
-Pressure to win- Players and coaches want the player to win for financial or personal gain
-Money- Athletes get lost in the idea of winning money and try to win at all costs
-Systematic Doping- For example Russia was banned for making their whole team take PEDs to enhance performance
-Feeling that others are taking PEDs may encourage a performer to also take PEDs in order to match them
Consequences of using PEDs
-Bans and fines: Lance armstrong (famous cyclist) was found to have been doping and was stripped of all tour de france titles
-Challenges the concept of fair play in sport
-Non-cheaters may be accused due to the actions of dopers
-Corruption may be spread through the sport
Strategies to reduce the use of PEDs
WADA- formed with the aim of reducing drug use in sport
Random testing- To catch dopers when they least expect it
Research- testing new PED detection methods and new types of PEDs
Limitations of trying to prevent the use of PEDs
-Illegal PED producers are always one step ahead, so it is difficult to tell which new PED is going to be produced
-Research plays a part in developing new detection methods, however, it also aids in the production of new PEDs
Examples of PED use in sport
Lance Armstrong- famous cyclist, discovered to be doping, stripped of all Tour De France medals
Maria Sharapova- Professional tennis player who was banned for 2 years in 2016 for taking meldonium, which acts as a beta-blocker
