VII.) Integration Management Tools Flashcards
IPM Tools Outline
- ) Biological Controls
- )Cultural Controls
- ) Mechanical and Physical Controls
- )Chemical Controls
Biological Controls
Any activity of one species that reduces the adverse effects of other pest species: often occurs naturally.
- (Exapmle: For insects. parasitoids)
- IPM seeks to enhance these situations against pests
Cultural Controls
The modification of normal crop or landscape management practices to decrease pests.
*Exampe: Timing of planting, harvest, crop rotation, sanitation, intercropping, fallowing, etc.
Mechanical/Physical Controls
Measures specifically taken to eliminate the pest directly or indirectly through changes in the environment that make it unsuitable for pest entry, dispersal, survival, and/or reproduction.
Chemical Control
Application of pesticides.
The challenge with IPM is how to use them efficiently and effectively without impacting non-target species and the environment. This is where some of the most important PCA decisions are made.
*Be aware of the mode of action.
*Application costs should not exceed economic return and goes back to considering action guidelines.
