VI.) Pest Prevention Flashcards
Pest Prevention Factors
- ) Host Resistance
- )Crop Rotation/Fallowing
- )Site selection
- )Habitat modification
Host Resistance:
Is a preventative pest management tool that takes advantage of the genetic attributes of certain plants cultivars allowing resistance or toleration from a pest attack.
- Common for pathogens, nematode pests, and to a more limited extent arthropods.
- Sometimes these cultivars can be more expensive
Crop Rotation:
Can be used to manage nematodes, weeds, and pathogens by interrupting a pests’ lifecycle. Also, planting crops that can compete with weeds can circumvent future problems.
Site-Selection:
Avoid planting in fields that are known to have a history of soil-borne diseases, insects, nematodes, etc. that a given crop is susceptible.
Habitat Modification
Limits the availability of one or more requirements (food, shelter, alternate host, etc.) for the pest, thereby making its survival more difficult. Improving the survival rate for predators is also an example of habitat modification.
